Matthew Woodman

Matthew WoodmanMatthew Woodman teaches writing at California State University, Bakersfield. His poems have appeared in recent issues of Unsplendid, Jab, Empty Mirror, Gris-Gris, Cactus Heart, and The Brasilia Review. Matthew has been teaching since 2000. When he is not teaching, he takes photographs, paints, gardens, travels, spends time with his son, writes poetry or reads.

What is your writing process?

In terms of my creative process, I write in whatever free time I can steal. Usually, this ends up being the evenings after my son has gone to bed, and sometimes I feel like Hemingway’s old man, trying to get the poem to shore before the sharks (of distraction, of obligation) devour the thought.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading Cesar Aira’s The Musical Brain and Kirstin Valdez Quade’s Night at the Fiestas.

What are your favorite books of all time?

As for the great bookshelf in my mind, I’d recommend Italo Calvino’s Baron in the Trees and Homero Aridjis’s Solar Poems.
