David Hathwell

David Hathwell – Version 2

David Hathwell is a former English teacher living and writing in the Bay Area. He has degrees in English, from Stanford and Columbia, as well as an advanced degree in music theory, from CUNY, and is now a piano student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His poems appear in The MacGuffin, Raintown Review, Slant, Driftwood Press, and Measure, and online at Cider Press Review, Blast Furnace, Angle, and Cordite Poetry Review. Muses, a chapbook, is forthcoming from David Robert Books.

On your nightstand:

Richard Wilbur’s translations of Molière. Next up: Willa Cather’s Death Comes for the Archbishop, Genanne Walsh’s new novel, Twister, and Paradise Lost (the first half at least).

Do you prefer reading print or ebooks?

I only read print. But not high-mindedly—the preference could be generational.

Besides writing, what’s your passion?

Music. Bach preeminently. I have an MA in music theory, and, in retirement, take piano at the San Francisco Conservatory and sing bass in the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco. I’d venture to say that my musical training has shaped the character of my poetry as much as any other influence. As a writer, I’ve learned something from music’s euphony, from musical rhythm and tempo, and even from musical phrase structure and formal structure.
