Suzie Vander Vorste

TR leafSuzie Vander Vorste, University of Cincinnati, writes nonfiction and poetry, and her previous work has appeared in Oakwood.

On your nightstand: Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking has taken up residence on my nightstand. It’s fantastic! I am finding what she says about her experience processing grief after someone dies heart-breaking and inspiring for my own work.

What book made the biggest impression on you as a kid?

The single book that stands out to me most from my childhood is Robert Munsch’s Love You Forever since my mother read it to me so often. It always reminds me of the idyllic aspect of being a child and being cared for as well as my mother’s support behind whatever I do.

Besides writing, what’s your passion?

Whenever I get a chance, I love to travel. I find it refreshing and eye-opening to go to new places, whether it’s somewhere in a state I haven’t been to before or an entirely different country. I also happen to identify with being a foodie, and I eagerly welcome the opportunity to try new foods and places to eat when I am somewhere new because of this.
